There’s no doubt the biggest concern for the Philadelphia 76ers entering the new year is their depth.
Outside of their starting lineup, there isn’t much consistency from anyone game to game.
It’s not a guarantee general manager Elton Brand can upgrade the roster via trade or the buyout market. So the 76ers must have faith in the injured Zhaire Smith to get healthy and be productive.
Smith will play this season
The No. 16 overall pick in the 2018 draft has yet to play this season due to a broken left food and a food allergy.
He recently made an appearance at a Texas Tech basketball game, where he played collegiate basketball last season.
Head coach Brett Brown spoke about Smith’s progression.
“Zhaire is in the gym every morning early in the morning, sometimes 5 a.m. He’s in good spirits,” Brown said.
Brown added the team expects him back this season but not before 2019.
Smith will be a welcome addition and should be an upgrade on the defensive end of the court. His offense may be a work in progress upon his return.
Perhaps he could help in the 76ers woes of covering guards and provide much needed bench depth.
But that can’t be determined until we see him playing basketball. He’s only a rookie but could be a key piece during the second half of the season.
Let’s hope he seizes the role.
