Two historic franchises with two powerful offenses will square off in the 2018 World Series.
It feels like just yesterday was Opening Day, yet here we are at the 2018 World Series. After taking down the Brewers in seven games, the Los Angeles Dodgers will be moving on to face Boston in a battle of baseball’s most formidable lineups.
The 2018 World Series will feature the two highest oWAR teams in the majors. Los Angeles sits in first place at 33.6 on the year, while the Red Sox are right behind with 31.5. The two squads are also first and second in OPS+. The Red Sox at 112, and the Dodgers at 109. Offensive runs above replacement—once again, Los Angeles and Boston lead the Majors.
Los Angeles Dodgers
For Los Angeles, Max Muncy leads the team in a number of offensive categories. Offensive WAR of 4.8, an OPS+ of 161, wRC+ of 162 and an OPS of .973 is beyond impressive. Justin Turner sits right behind Muncy in each of these statistics and passes him up in total bWAR due to Turner’s fielding abilities. Muncy possesses the highest walk percentage on the team, while Turner strikes out at the lowest rate.
Boston Red Sox
On the flip side, the Red Sox are equally impressive at the plate. Mookie Betts is the likely American League MVP this season and is joined by teammate JD Martinez in that MVP race. The two sit at 186 and 173 OPS+, respectively. The Sox lead the Majors on the slash line with the highest batting average (.268), on-base percentage (.339) and slugging (.453). Xander Bogaerts and Andrew Benintendi have also been consistent contributors with 5.6 and 4.0 offensive bWAR.
2018 World Series
These two spectacular offenses will have a difficult task going against the No. 1 and No. 12 teams in pitching WAR. Despite a slightly weaker bullpen, the Dodgers boast the second-best FIP in the majors for starting pitching. Boston is more balance at No. 6 for relievers and No. 8 for its starting pitching.
