Football season is right around the corner. For the Kentucky Wildcats there’s still a lot in the air bout their future. After losing Stephen Johnson their spot at quarterback is wide open with no real favorite of who will be the new starter. With almost a month until the season many fans are wondering who will be under center come week one. Returner Gunnar Hoak and JUCO transfer Terry Wilson are the two favorites, but who will win the job?
Gunnar Hoak is coming into this season as a returner to this Kentucky football program. Hoak is a sophomore who has proven himself in Mark Stoops system. He’s deemed as a pocket passer with great accuracy and presence in the pocket. Hoak is good at looking downfield and putting guys in positions to catch the ball and make plays after. His style of play is similar to Drew Barker’s but Hoak is also comfortable on the move. Although it’s not his strength it’s still a part of his game that will come in handy especially in conference play. Hoak has a promising future in the program. We’ll see if he gets the nod week one and can start for the Cats.
Terry Wilson’s style of play is a lot different than Hoak’s. Wilson is seen as more of a dual threat quarterback who’s best when he’s on the run. Last season at Garden City Community College Wilson rushed for 518 yards on 126 carries. With rushing skills like that he will definitely be utilized by Mark Stoops. There’s still a lot to be seen from Wilson though. He hasn’t been in the system as long as Hoak and in the spring game he didn’t look as accurate as Hoak. There’s still a lot to be seen from Wilson before the season starts. As the new guy on the team it’ll be interesting to see what Stoops does with him week one.
Who will start?
Come week one I think the starter for Kentucky will be Terry Wilson. With his athletic ability and potential he’s just too good to bring in just to sit the bench. Maybe Stoops will use both but for now I give the edge to Terry Wilson.
