Grant Williams, who as a 6’7” is a bit undersized for his position has a lot of upside. When it comes to drafting, most NBA teams are scared to go all in on an undersized player mainly the power forward position. Draymond Green though, has shown that taking a risk on these players, can be worth the reward.
Grant Williams, who had an outstanding career while at Tennessee, will not be running the show with the Celtics, but given time to develop could become a key role player for Boston. The Celtics front-court has a lot to be questioned, which leaves plenty of opportunity for Williams to get extra playing time. While either Jayson Tatum or Gordon Hayward will either start at the power forward position, both players like to play out on the wing. Williams has more of a back to the basket kind of game, similar to Semi Ojeleye. While both of them play the same undersized position, Williams beats Ojeleye out with his already established offensive game.
The NBA is littered with big men who can knock down the three, Williams will need to develop more of a consistent shooter from beyond the arc. He also needs to develop a more consistent jumper, and improve handling on the basketball. Williams needs to learn to use his athleticism to counterweigh him being undersized for the power forward position.
The Celtics landed themselves someone who has already bought into the culture, Brad Stevens has established. Williams is a gritty player, who can not only go up and get rebounds, but can bully someone downlow for an easy lay in. As the season progresses, I can see Williams earning more minutes, and an established role.
Williams who has tremendous upside is a Draymond Green type player. If he can work on his three ball, and lateral quickness, he can guard just about any position. He is just that type of player. Given time to develop his skills and get a jumper down, Williams can be a key role player for the Celtics for many years.
