After a heartbreaking, offense-heavy loss to Oklahoma last week, West Virginia‘s regular season has come to a disappointing end. With the win, the Sooners clinched their spot in the Big 12 Championship, where they will attempt to redeem themselves against the Texas Longhorns.

Looking back on the Mountaineers’ regular season, it’s obvious this team had more potential than the end result shows. West Virginia started the season 5-0, a streak that was ended by an unranked Iowa State team.

The Mountaineers bounced back, though, knocking off Baylor, Texas, and TCU. West Virginia was back on track to a 10-win season.

Unfortunately, that road ended in Stillwater, Oklahoma. In an embarrassing performance against Oklahoma State, the Mountaineers blew a 17-point lead, falling to the 5-5 Cowboys.

This loss put a lot of pressure on the Mountaineers when the Oklahoma Sooners came to Morgantown. With a trip to the Big 12 Championship on the line, the Mountaineers looked to end their losing streak against OU.

However, in true West Virginia fashion, they came up with the most creative way to blow it. This time? Two Will Grier fumbles that were recovered by the Sooners for touchdowns. These turnovers (plus some questionable defensive play calling) resulted in a loss, 59-56, ending the Mountaineers’ regular season at 8-3.

So, where does West Virginia go from here?

To a mediocre bowl game, of course.

As of yesterday, ESPN projects the Mountaineers will face either Syracuse in the Camping World Bowl, or Washington State in the Valero Alamo Bowl.

There are other scenarios, of course, but they are all pretty far-fetched at this point.

And what’s in store for the future of Mountaineer football?

I’m not sure. But I do know that there was too much talent on this team to be finishing 8-3 and playing in some no-name bowl. If West Virginia wants to see improvement down the road, some serious changes need to be made within the coaching staff. I don’t know why the fans continue to settle for mediocre seasons followed by mediocre bowl games every year, but I do know that as a WVU student and life-long Mountaineer, I am exhausted.
