Welcome to an all new weekly Overwatch News Recap. We finally got a weekend full of amazing Overwatch matches, including some more player additions in the Overwatch League news section.

Overwatch World Cup

First of all, lets take a quick look back at the World Cup. To no ones surprise really, South Korea could win the World Cup once again, for three consecutive years – CONGRATULATIONS.

While it must seem like it was clear from the beginning, and with a lot of upsets throughout, it was anything but easy for South Korea.

The first four semi-finals had one clear winner, Team USA, but no one really took Team UK into account. While the first match went fully in favor of the USA, the UK pulled through and won with an impressive 3-1. Mostly thanks to their newly added main tank Fusions.

Unfortunately, their run ended in the next match up against South Korea, but it was a very close one. After closely losing the first map, Team UK gave it their all and held their ground. Even though they could not win the next two maps, they managed to make both maps a draw – a great accomplishment by the Brits. They almost took South Korea to a map five, but in the end South Korea just played better and won map four and the match, advancing to the finals.

Another surprising score came from Team Canada, playing the masters of the GOATS (three tanks, three supports) composition – Team France. Most predictions would have had both teams close up, but Canada just made every comp that France pulled out useless. In the end, Canada advanced to the semifinals with an impressive 3-0.

And then there is China, who were kind of considered favorites (besides South Korea), but no one really knew just how good they would fare. But they had no problem to take on Team Finland, and later Team Canada in the semifinals, and won both matches with an impressive 3-0.

By now, most people would have thought they have a real chance to beat South Korea. In the end, they weren’t even able to take just one map off the 2017 champions. Even though, all teams played some great Overwatch and it was a pleasure to watch the matches. Now we all have to wait for February 14, 2019, for the Overwatch League Season 2 to start – roughly three months.

Overwatch League

While waiting in anticipation of the next season, the teams don’t sleep and a lot of roster additions are made. We are also still waiting for Vancouver, Washington, Chengdu, Hangzhou and Guangzhou to announce their name and players.

New York signed Fl0w3r

Probably the most exciting news from last week, it is finally time for Fl0w3r to join the ranks of the Overwatch League. Now joining the New York Excelsior for Season 2, he has been an impressive talent ever since his appearance at the World Cup in 2017. During the same time he also played with Saebyeolbe, Mek0, Janus, Pine, Mano and JJoNak in LW Blue. With the others, he was initially picked up by NYXL, but due to his age, had to play for their Contenders teams XL2 instead.

Now he is 18 and as one of the most versatile and feared DPS, it will be great to finally see him on the big stage.

Toronto announce two more players

Jae-yoon “Aid” Go joins the Toronto Defiant as their main support. He has previously played for the Outlaws Contenders team GGEA. Gyeong-mu “Yakpung” Jo is a main tank player, who was playing for O2 Ardeont before and has shown a lot of promise for his Winston. With only six players announced so far, we can expect at least two more additions to the team.

Boston signs two players

The additional two players for the Boston Uprising are projectile DPS Kelsey “Colourhex” Brise and main tank Min-seob “Axxiom” Park. Both players are coming from Toronto Esports, the Contenders team for the Boston Uprising. While Colourhex won Overwatch Contenders S2 Australia with his old team Sydney Drop Bears, Axxiom took the second place in Contenders S1 North America with Toronto Esports.

Manneten to Mayhem Academy

Last but not least, Manneten is coming back to Florida, but only to Mayhem Academy, the Contenders team of the Florida Mayhem. Having been praised by fans as one of the best players on the old Mayhem roster, it is a shame that no OWL team has picked the up the off tank. Luckily, he is not gone completely and will show his worth once again for the Mayhem Academy team in Contenders Season 3 North America.

I was born in Germany and now live in the UK since 2015. I started to get into gaming with my first NES, playing Mario. I owned each of the Nintendo consoles after, until I got my first PC when I was around 14. Some years later, I played my first RTS (Command & Conquer) and FPS (Wolfenstein) games and never quit playing. I prefer team games and played an Unreal Tournament Mod called Deathball for over 10 years. Overwatch got me into the eSports scene, and was the motivator to change my path – from working in the IT to do something I love. Some of my all time favourite games are Soldier of Fortune II, Deathball, Warcraft 3, F.E.A.R, Zelda, Mario Kart and Overwatch. Besides gaming, I love to read and write and spending time with my cats.
