After ending the football season below .500 for the first time in 26 years, Hokies have put their faith into Men’s Basketball Coach Buzz Williams. “We’re a basketball school now,” students exclaimed as Cincinnati edged them out at the Military Bowl earlier in the week. Those students may be onto something. Now, the team is entering conference play at 11-1 and ranked 10th in the nation for two consecutive weeks.
Through 12 non-conference games, Virginia Tech has dominated their opponents winning by an average of 24 points; all but three are by least a margin of 15. Under Williams this season, the team is outshooting opponents, out-rebounding them, out-assisting them, and forcing more turnovers. The three game has also played a factor in this team’s success. Tech is knocking down 11 3’s a game and shooting at 45%. Players like Ahmed Hill and Ty Outlaw shooting above .500. The roster has only fallen once thus far, losing to Penn State by just one point after a rare showing where all but four players failed to score. Even starter Ahmed Hill went 0/9 in his 38 minutes.
Virginia Tech in the ACC
Virginia Tech has already picked up one conference win as play began Tuesday, controlling Notre Dame in the second half all the way to stunning 66-81 victory. This was their 10th 15 point win of the season. Kerry Blackshear Jr. had himself a night scoring a season-high 21, seven rebounds and a stunning block against the Fighting Irish. Ahmed Hill and Nickel Alexandria-Walker added another 17 points each. While guard Justin Robinson only put up seven points, he made up for with assists hitting eight dimes on the night.
Coach Buzz Williams and the Hokies will take on Boston College this Saturday. They will continue to be challenged as they journey through a strong ACC. #1 Duke, undefeated #4 UVA, and #9 FSU will look to topple the surprising dominance coming out of Cassell Coliseum. #15 UNC and #18 NC State will also look to regain power in the conference. One thing is for certain with the Hokies, with the current success of the Men’s team and the powerful 13-1 run by Coach Kenny Brooks and Women’s team, Virginia Tech may finally have a claim at being a basketball school.
