Georgia Tech’s triple option batters the Hokies
On a Thursday night in Blacksburg, the Virginia Tech Hokies welcomed ACC rival Georgia Tech. Bud Foster’s defense could not find an answer for the Yellow Jackets as quarterback Tobias Oliver ran for over 200 yards. This marks the third time the Hokies have allowed an opposing player to rush for over 150 yards this season.
The Yellow Jackets finished with over 450 yards rushing and did not complete a single pass. Ryan Willis tried his best to create a spark on offense throwing for 201 yards and two touchdowns to receivers Damon Hazelton and Tre Turner.
What’s next for the Hokies
The Hokies have struggled after starting the season with victories over Florida State and William & Mary. Virginia Tech’s opponents outscored them 176-139 as they lost three of their next five, including giving up over 40 points in each of the three losses.
With this being the first loss in conference play, the Hokies still control their own fate. If they are able to win out they should find themselves playing in the ACC title game. For now, the team will turn its focus to the 24th ranked Boston College Eagles who are coming off a big win against the Miami Hurricanes.
This year’s preseason men’s college basketball rankings were released last week. Virginia Tech fans are eagerly awaiting the start of this season as the Hokies opened ranked 14th in the nation. Head coach Buzz Williams has four returning starters.
The Hokies have lost in the first round of the NCAA tournament each of the past two seasons. Therefore, the key will be if Williams can correct the defensive woes the Hokies dealt with last season. This can be the year they put it all together and make a deep run in March.
