After two tight matches at Thompson Field, Virginia Tech went back on the road to face #3 UNC at Durham. The Hokies fell to the Tar Heels 2-1 in the tight contest, moving them to 2-2-2 on the road.

Match Breakdown

Virginia Tech opened the match on the attack, but North Carolina was the first team to strike with a 21’ goal from senior Nils Bruening. Looking for the equalizer, Vincent Jackson II headed in a cross from James Kasak to tie the game 1-1. This marked Jackson’s first goal of the season, and with the young freshman looking to earn more minutes, a goal against the Tar Heels will certainly put him on Coach Brizendine’s radar.

North Carolina’s defense came alive in the second half locking down the Hokie offense. Virginia Tech tried to break past the Carolina defense for the lead with a header from Sivert Haugli which fell just high and a 25 yard free kick from captain Jon Ingason, but UNC held strong. Eventually, it was the Hokie defense who conceded what would be the winning goal after Nils Bruening snuck the ball past Mathijs Swaneveld in the 84’. Bruening marked his second of the match with this goal, and tallied up his fifth of the season.

Three Details of Note

  1. This game went, unfortunately, as it was supposed to. UNC is 9-1 on the season, and this match maintains their undefeated record in the ACC. Unlike their loss to South Carolina, this is not a match to be ashamed of.
  2. Virginia Tech struggled to find shots on goal. After shooting 10 total shots, only two fell on target. On the flip side, UNC only took 3 more shots than Virginia Tech, but the Tar Heels had four shots on target, double rate.
  3. The first half was incredibly close, but eight Virginia Tech’s 10 shots came in first half. With only two chances in the second half, none of which were on target, it would’ve been impossible for Tech to win in 90’. On the flip side, UNC took five shots and one goal in the first half, and then followed up with eight shots in the second half. The combination of a strong attack from UNC, and lack of offense from VT meant the 2-1 scoreline was inevitable.
