Basketball School

This term is too often used in my opinion. But Kentucky is a text book case. This label is not saying that UK fans don’t care about football, or that the University doesn’t invest enough of it’s resources. It just puts into perspective just how great the winning tradition that surrounds the University of Kentucky basketball is. UK could still become a consistent contender on the football field, but it will always be overshadowed by what they’ve done on the hardwood.

There are schools that have seen substantial success in multiple sports. The University of Florida would probably be my best example. But even after an NCAA mini dynasty was built, Billy Donovan, still left for the NBA.

The more support the fans and university show the football program will undoubtedly translate to improvement.

But I don’t believe any apologies need to be made for the basketball program being the undisputed top dog.

The Competition is better

The SEC is one of the best conferences in all of college football. In actuality, it is probably the best, especially in the last 20 years. It aggravates me when people want to debate this, so we can just agree that the SEC is a VERY good at football.

This fact is the obvious reason why USA Today ranked Kentucky as the 8th toughest program to have sustained football success.

In his first 5 seasons at UK, Mark Stoops, has a conference record of 12-28. The Cats have also never had an above .500 record in conference play under Coach Stoops.

However, with back to back 4-4 seasons in the SEC, this may be the year Kentucky can get over the hump.

Since 2006 the SouthEastern conference has tallied 9 national football championships. Wow, that is some serious company to keep.

Even with all of Mark Stoops great recruiting efforts winning at UK will always be an uphill battle. But it is a battle that can be won.

There is no reason that Kentucky cannot compete the likes of Vanderbilt, South Carolina, and even Mississippi State.

2018 will be the year of reckoning for Coach Stoops and his staff.

The weapons are there for the Cats to make some noise and get a big upset win.
