The offense has to come somewhere besides Benny Snell
Benny Snell has obviously made a name for himself in the Southeastern Conference, but UK has other skill position players that can make a big time impact on the offensive side of the ball. Snell’s greatness should even allow additional opportunities for the Kentucky wide receiving core to find space downfield. Dorian Baker, Tavin Richardson, and Lynn Bowden all have experience that will be relied upon no matter who the starting quarterback is.
The narrative of having the “most talent in years” but limited production is getting played out. The time for action is now. This wide receiver group has the chance to provide some much needed variety to the offense.
As much as Eddie Gran may want to, he can’t hand the ball off to Benny Snell on every play.
Baker leads all returning wide receivers with 88 career catches. It is unfortunate that many people remember Baker for his consistent dropped passes than his brighter spots. Nonetheless, Dorian Baker has an opportunity to rebound from the injury that caused him to miss all of last season and make his mark at Kentucky. He has shown glimpses of being a dominant receiver but the injuries and lack of consistency have throttled his output. Baker’s production will rely heavily on the play of the quarterback.
Dorian Baker will always be remembered for his huge touchdown grab against Louisville in 2016.
I don’t believe anybody has seen Lynn Bowden even scratch the surface of what he is capable of. He is a threat to take it to the house every time he is on the field. Bowden’s challenge this year will be execution and trying to make himself a reliable player who can be on the field for extended periods of time. He has accumulated 17 catches in his career while showing glimpses of elite play making ability.
Lynn Bowden is a major reason why I am extremely excited to watch Kentucky football this year. The Big Blue Nation knows that Benny Snell is an NFL type back, if Bowden can fit that same mold then the SEC is going to have a problem on its hands.
