On Leap Day, a special event will take place, and it’s not the fact that Leap Day only occurs once every four years.
Now, sure, Feb. 29 taking place once every four years is a unique event in and of itself—but a unique day deserves an event as equally as special as Feb. 29.
The Ultimate Fighting Championship will deliver that special event this Feb. 29—and it highlights UFC on ESPN+ 27.
Coverage of the 12-fight card begins at 5 p.m. EST, 2 p.m. PST, continuing with main card action at 8 p.m. EST, 5 p.m. PST—in its entirety on ESPN+.
Saturday night’s main attraction of the Norfolk, VA UFC Fight Night at Chartway Arena is the battle for the UFC’s vacant Flyweight Championship.
No. 1 contender Joseph Benavidez (28-5) fights No. 3 contender Deivison Figuereido (17-1) to close the show.
UPDATE: Only Joseph Benavidez is eligible to claim the vacant championship on Saturday night. Deivison Figureido missed weight at Friday’s weigh-in.
This title fight will be a maximum of five rounds at five minutes per round.
Former Flyweight champion Henry Cejudo vacated the title back in December to concentrate his efforts on his defense of the UFC’s Bantamweight championship.
Heading into Saturday night’s main event, Deivison Figuereido is the taller man at 5-foot-5 one inch taller than Joseph Benavidez’ 5-foot-4 frame.
How they got here:
Both contestants in this championship main event have posted 4-1 records in their respective last five fights.
Joseph Benavidez will enter this fight on a three-match winning streak.
Most recently, he stopped Jussier Formiga by second-round knockout last June in UFC on ESPN 3’s co-main event from Target Center in Minneapolis.
In the other corner, Deivison Figuereido will come into this fight on a two-match winning streak.
Last time out, he submitted Tim Elliott (first-round guillotine choke) in UFC on ESPN+ 19’s undercard on Oct. 12.
The Tale of the Tape:
UFC.com shows that Figuereido has a three-inch reach advantage (68 inches to 65 inches), as well as a two-inch leg reach advantage (38 inches to 36 inches) over Benavidez heading into this main event.
Prediction: Joseph Benavidez by unanimous decision.
Other fights on Saturday night’s main card include:
Felicia Spencer (7-0) vs. Zarah Fairn (6-2) [Women’s Featherweight co-main event]
Ion Cutelaba (14-4, one no-contest) vs. Magomed Ankalev (11-1) [Light Heavyweight]
Megan Anderson (9-4) vs. Norma Dumont (4-0, UFC debut) [Women’s Featherweight]
Grant Dawson (14-1) vs. Darrick Minner (24-10, UFC debut) [Featherweight]
