Former Philadelphia 76ers guard TJ McConnell officially signed his free agent contract with the Indiana Pacers. McConnell will always hold a special place in Sixers fans hearts for his undeniable work ethic and commitment to playing hard every second he spent on the court.
He took to Instagram to describe what the city of Philadelphia meant to him during his four-year tenure. His passion on the court and his understanding of the fans cannot be replaced. The Sixers won’t be as fun to watch without him coming off the bench.

PHILLY PHILLY. Man where do I even begin? I can’t put into words how much this city means to me. Four years ago I came into training camp unsure of what to think. I knew there was a lot of competition but was confident I could snag a roster spot. The day I made the team was one of the best days of my life. This city quickly adopted me and accepted me for who I was. The gritty boy from Pittsburgh. I have had so many memories here. I’ve been here from the start of the process and saw this team develop to what it is today. Being there from the start through two great playoff runs has been one of my greatest blessings. I have met some of my best friends for life here and I will forever be grateful. I will never forget my time in the city of brotherly love. The warmth you have showed my family and I is truly amazing. I love all of you very much. THANK YOU. I want to especially thank the whole @sixers organization for everything you’ve done for my family and I. You have become a second family to me. I cherish each and every one of you and the relationships we have formed. THANK YOU. I also want to thank @michaelschulson @daviddodge @tatwatches @76ersixthman for your hospitality and taking care of us. It is much appreciated.
Embodied the Process
McConnell was the last player remaining from the infamous 10-win team just four seasons ago. (Joel Embiid was on the team but didn’t play the entire season.) That team won’t be remembered fondly by the record books, but hopefully it will be remembered as a necessary step back to relevance in the NBA.
Alongside Robert Covington, he took advantage of the Sixers long rebuild plan and turned it into a full-time job in the league. He made his name in the league for doing all the little things other players wouldn’t even think to do.
Due to his style of diving for loose balls, forcing turnovers on inbounds passes and playing full court defense, he made himself a unique type of player.
Thanks for the Memories
McConnell had many memorable moments including a game winner against the New York Knicks during the 2016-2017 season. Perhaps his finest moment as a Sixer came in the playoffs two years ago against the Boston Celtics.
With the Sixers trailing the series 3-0, head coach Brett Brown put him into the stating lineup to give the team a boost. He was his usually aggressive self the entire game, scoring 19 points and leading the team to a win. Toward the end of the game the crowd chanted “TJ” in appreciation of his performance.
The Pacers are getting a good player and even better teammate in TJ McConnell.
