While the Titans‘ offense has had some games where they put up a lot of points and yardage, they have had a very lackluster year for the most part. Marcus Mariota has thrown for only 10 touchdowns to 14 interceptions and the run game is not even close to what is was last year.

With offensive weapons like Delanie Walker, Rishard Matthews, DeMarco Murray, and more, there is no reason for the offense to be struggling as much as it has been. However, they are, and the defense has been saving their butts throughout most of the season. Coming into the year, the defense and special teams is what most people were worried about. The special teams has been fantastic throughout the whole year with Brett Kern having a career year and being the best punter in the league statistically. Offseason acquisitions like Darren Bates and Brandon Traywick have helped a lot as well.

On the defensive side of the ball though, upcoming star Kevin Byard has been lights out all season and is currently tied with A.J. Bouye with six interceptions for the most in the league. Overall, the defense has 37 total sacks as a team with Derrick Morgan leading the way with 7.5 sacks, Brian Orakpo with 6, and Jurrell Casey with 5. The defense made a stand in the Houston game two weeks ago (along with a great crowd) forcing the Texans to three straight false starts late in the game, leading to a Titans win. They held the Cardinals to no touchdowns and forced Phil Dawson to kick five field goals, in which he only missed one.

The defense has stood their ground multiple times this season holding the Browns to only 9 points and late game defensive stands against Ravens and Bengals that both led to Titans victories. I’m not saying that the Titans’ defense is the only good thing about this football team, but lately, it has been the best thing about this football team by far. I realize that the offense has put up some good numbers so far this year, but it hasn’t really been clicking. It’s just been a good play here and there to make it look like everything it’s been okay.

The defense has been doing there job. Titans offense, it’s time to step up and do yours.
