The Titans held a team on team scrimmage at Nissan Stadium this past Saturday and there were a lot of things to notice. Derrick Henry got a lot of reps with the first team offense during the scrimmage as DeMarco Murray was out with a hamstring injury. Corey Davis was also out with a hamstring injury which allowed other receivers to get more reps in the scrimmage to try and prove themselves while in camp. Lastly, a huge point of focus during the scrimmage was the kicking and punt return game and who was going to receive the kicks. Throughout the scrimmage, we saw Khalfani Muhammad, Taywan Taylor, Eric Weems, and Adoree Jackson all return kicks and punts.
DeMarco Murray was not practicing on Sunday due to his hamstring, which allowed Derrick Henry to get the first team reps. Henry performed well during the scrimmage and showed his ability to be the number one back on this team in the future.
David Fluellen, who is in a camp battle with Khalfani Muhammad for the 3rd RB spot, got the reps at the #2 back for most of the scrimmage. Recently, the Titans agreed to terms with former Louisville RB Brandon Radcliff.
A lot of fans were asking if this means that DeMarco is hurt bad. In the words of Aaron Rodgers, R-E-L-A-X. DeMarco will be fine, teams will do this throughout camp every year to bring in a little more competition to camp.
For all of the right reasons, Corey Davis is the main topic of talk at camp this year. After injuring his hamstring at practice, Coach Mularkey said that Davis will be on a week to week basis with his injury. This by no means says that Davis is hurt bad, but it just says that the Titans are playing if safe with Corey which is totally fine. Davis, the 5th overall pick in this year’s draft, has a lot of expectations on him being the first receiver drafted and who will be the true #1 receiver for the Titans for years to come. The Titans do not want to force the issue with Davis because they know the ability and potential that he has and can produce in this league.
The Titans have a whole lot of options at the return game and they are trying all of them out. During last weeks scrimmage, they used Adoree Jackson, Khalfani Muhammad, Taywan Taylor, and Eric Weems.
- Adoree Jackson: Returned three kickoffs and three punts
- Khalfani Muhammad: Returned one kickoff and one punt
- Taywan Taylor: Returned one kickoff (fumbled on the return)
- Eric Weems: Returned one kickoff and one punt
The Titans really seem to like Adoree a lot in the return game as they used him a lot (it helps that he was a return specialist in college). Taylor and Muhammad both have the ability to return the ball but they will most likely be used in the respective positions at WR and RB. Lastly, Eric Weems (who is a return specialist) is in a interesting position. Weems was not used as much in the return game in the scrimmage, and he wont likely make the team as a wide receiver so it will be interesting to see how everything plays out for him.
Overall, the Titans looked well in the scrimmage. Marcus Mariota ran for a touchdown, which is good to see coming off of his leg injury, and he connected well with tight-ends Delanie Walker and Jonnu Smith. The defense looked solid and the team as a whole looked good entering this week as they head to the northeast to play the Jets in week one of the preseason.
