The comeback experiment for former Cy Young winner Tim Lincecum will have to be put on hold as the Angels designated him for Minor League assignment on Saturday August 6. After another sub-par start where he gave up 6 runs on 9 hits and only going 3.1 innings, Lincecum has lost his spot in the Halos’ starting rotation and on the roster altogether. The return of Tyler Skaggs and arrival of Ricky Nolasco were likely factors in the decision. However, given that Lincecum has only had 1 quality start in 9 games for the Angels this year, the determining factor was more likely that Lincecum is washed up. Most hoped he would come back and pitch the way he did with the Giants. However, it seemed the decline that ended his career with the Giants carried into his time in Los Angeles.
In exchange for the loss of Lincecum, the Angels recalled RHP Jose Valdez. He will be the 14th pitcher to start for the Angels this season. This move is probably not the answer to the Angels’ pitching struggles. But hopefully for fans, it is a step in the right direction. The Halos will look to get back on track tonight when they face the Mariners. Tyler Skaggs will look to earn his third straight quality start since returning to the club.
