South Carolina travels to Oxford, Mississippi to face their SEC West rotation opponent. Ole Miss is 5-3, but they are only 1-3 in SEC play. Ole Miss is known for their receiving core led by AJ Brown, but they are held back by their defense. I want to see three things from the Gamecocks tomorrow.

Give me Mon Denson

I want to see more Mon Denson. Don’t get me wrong, Rico Dowdle and Ty’Son Williams are good running backs. Junior Mon Denson is currently third on the depth chart, but he showed that he can keep up with the other two backs last week when he averaged five yards per carry against Tennessee. He should be able to split carries with Dowdle and Williams tomorrow since Ole Miss has a less than average run defense. I expect the Gamecocks to put up 200 yards on the ground.

Conservative pass defense

The second thing I want to see is a conservative pass defense. AJ Brown is a deadly receiver, and he can burn corners despite his height. The Gamecock secondary needs to be conservative and not try to force interceptions. They should stick to a four man rush and force Jordan Ta’amu to use his legs. The third down defense also needs to improve after last weekend. Tennessee finished 11-16 on third downs and at one point was 9-12. That needs to improve against an offense that is way more explosive than Tennessee.

Get out the gates fast

The final thing I want to see is South Carolina start hot. In the last two games, South Carolina has only scored nine points in the first half. all nine of those were against Tennessee. In seven games this year, South Carolina has only had the halftime lead twice. That is a stat that needs to change. The Gamecocks can change that by taking more deep shots and being riskier with play calling. Last week, South Carolina’s first drive ended in a three and out and not a single first down.

If the Gamecocks win, they should make a bowl this year. If they lose, it will be a rough final stretch for this team.

My name is Noah Patheja. I am currently a Sophomore at the University of South Carolina. I also write for the Daily Gamecock, which is the student paper at USC. I am the youngest of four children, and the only child in my family to not go to college in Alabama, even though my family has no connection to the state of Alabama. I have wanted to go to South Carolina since I was nine, and I was happy to accomplish my life goal of attending my favorite university. I haven’t followed football closely my whole life, but ever since I was 11, I have been fully invested in the Gamecocks, including having season tickets in 2014. A fun fact about me is that my family and I used to be Clemson fans a long time ago when we first moved to South Carolina.
