The Atlanta Hawks are back for the second half of the season after the All-Star break. This was time for players to either relax or get prepared for the end of the season. The Hawks had John Collins and Trae Young to participate in All-Star weekend, and there will be plenty more appearances to come. With some time to rejuvenate, the team should be ready to roll on Friday against the Pistons. Here are some things to look out for heading into the second half of the season.

Jaylen Adams backing up Young

Travis Schlenk stated that he expects Jaylen Adams to finish the rest of the season taking Jeremy Lin’s spot. The team announced that they converted Adams contract to a mutli-year contract. This is no surprise after waiving Lin, and he was the only backup point guard on the team. The Hawks could’ve let DeAndre’ Bembry or Kent Bazemore take over as the backup, but evaluating talent is what the team has decided to do. This gives Adams a chance to show his talents to the Hawks and also other teams around the league if they do not decide to keep him after this season.

Young players playing more minutes

This team already consists of mostly young players, but it may be time to give some of the older vets some time off. The Hawks will of course be evaluating their talent to end the season, and they already know what some of the players are capable of. Kent Bazemore and Vince Carter may see reduced minutes, or Coach Pierce might decide to keep everything the same from the start of the season. They just recently signed guard Jordan Sibert to a 10-day contract, so expect to see him in the upcoming games.

A more hungry team

Maybe this is just me, but maybe the Hawks will be more motivated to end the season. They were playing well before the break, so they would want to keep that same momentum. It’s clear now that Taurean Prince has been hearing the criticism that many people have been giving him this season. John Collins was disrespected in the slam dunk contest. Trae Young had the chance to take home two trophies over the weekend. This may be a reach, but you never know if players have secret motivation nowadays (just ask Lebron).

Mediocrity and heartbreak. That’s what your life consists of being an Atlanta sports fan, and I’ve lived it for years now. The Atlanta Hawks have been labeled as mediocre for 10 years straight. Even when they were one of the best teams in 2015, they were swept by the Cavaliers in the Conference Finals. The Falcons are nothing different. Mediocre enough to get to the playoffs, and then vulnerable enough to break your hearts at the end. I know you watched the Super Bowl. So as an Atlanta fan you’re either going to get one or the other. It’s sad to say, but I’m numb to it. One day we’ll break this curse, the question is when?
