This week, the Los Angeles Lakers were in the news quite a bit with trade rumors and a star player announcing his new movie. First, Jimmy Butler, a member of the Minnesota Timberwolves, requested a trade as he no longer wants to be in Minnesota. Butler is on the last year of his contract. Teams don’t want to give up much for Butler if they only have him for one year. In order to get as much leverage as possible, Butler gave the Wolves a list of three teams he would like to play for. This makes other teams around the league not want to trade for Butler and make those three teams give up more and want Butler more since they could sign him to an extension.

The three on his list were the New York Knicks, Brooklyn Nets and the Los Angeles Clippers. There are a few very interesting things to notice on this list. First, none of these teams are in the position to win an NBA championship. This list clearly shows that either Butler cares about money/a big market over winning or that he believes he is good enough to single-handedly carry one of those teams to the playoffs. Another thing interesting about the list is that all the New York and Los Angeles teams are listed except for one, the Lakers. Obviously, New York and LA are the biggest markets so not having the Lakers on his list means that he just doesn’t want to play with LeBron James. The ultimate question is will this become a recurring theme in future offseasons?

LeBron James Enters Hollywood

James has also been in the news this week. One main reason James came to LA was for the off-court opportunities. He’s definitely taking advantage of Hollywood as it was announced he will star in a Space Jam remake. It will not be a sequel and its not entirely known what it will be. It will definitely be in the same family as the original Space Jam in which Michael Jordan started in.

All in all, the Lakers were in the news quite a bit this past week and will continue to be in the news all season long.

My name is Matthew Shapiro and I am from a suburb northwest of Los Angeles. Since I was born, I have been a Lakers fan. As a fan of the Lakers, I’ve seen everything. I’ve seen them at their highs and at their lows. Besides the Lakers, I am also a huge Dodgers, Astros and Seahawks fan. When not watching, reading or breathing sports I love playing basketball and soccer. Another activity I enjoy doing is giving back to my community. For example, every week I help children with special needs play baseball. Please continue to follow my page and the Armchair All Americans site.
