The NBA just recently wrapped up their third annual NBA Africa game which took place in Pretoria, South Africa. This marked the third time that an NBA game has taken place on the continent of Africa. In this game, they have two teams.
Team World consists of NBA players from countries such as the United States, Canada, Spain and more. Team Africa consists of players that were born in Africa or players that have direct family ties to the country and both teams play in an exhibition game.
2015 was the first year for the NBA Africa game. It took place in Johannesburg, South Africa. Both teams had players such as Giannis Antetokounmpo, Bradley Beal, Serge Ibaka, Marc Gasol, Pau Gasol and Chris Paul. Team world would go on to defeat Team Africa, Paul and Luol Deng were named MVP’s of the game.
This was the second annual game hosted again in Johannesburg, South Africa. Deng and Thabo Sefolosha were the captains for Team Africa. Dirk Nowitzki and Kemba Walker were the captains for Team World. Team World would again edge out the victory with a score of 108-97. The MVP of the game was awarded to Victor Oladipo of Team Africa.
2018 was the third installment of this time hosted in Pretoria. For Team World, the captains were Rudy Gay and Khris Middleton. For Team Africa, the captains were Bismack Biyombo and Joel Embiid. Team World would again end up victorious against Team Africa, 96-92. Danilo Gallinari was named the game MVP.
More than a game
This game was the finale of the week of events. The events included a Basketball Without Borders camp as well as many other events for different charities. Some charities included were the Nelson Mandela Foundation, UNICEF, the Boys and Girls Club of South Africa and SOSCVSA which stands for the SOS Children’s Villages South Africa.
Of course, the NBA is continuing to expand its reach worldwide. That is the league’s ultimate goal. The NBA has done the best job of any league in doing so.
