Brown’s Improvement

The now No. 23 Boston College Eagles are a perfect 3-0 after the 41-34 defeat of Wake Forest on Thursday night. This is thanks to the career night from quarterback Anthony Brown. Brown, a redshirt sophomore, went 16-for-25 for 304 yards and five touchdowns. His yards and touchdown statistics were both career highs. Brown looks to have improved mightily since last season when he only played 10 games due to a knee injury that required season-ending surgery.

The young quarterback has returned with a vengeance this season, almost surpassing some of last year’s statistics in only three games. In his 10 games last season Brown threw for 1,367 yards, 11 touchdowns and nine interceptions. This season, Brown has already thrown for 626 yards, nine touchdowns and is still yet to be picked off. The reason for this improvement is due partly to Brown’s maturation as a quarterback, but also has to do with an improved running game.

Play Action Strength

Anyone who has watched BC football this year knows that AJ Dillon is a beast. The preseason ACC player of the year was undoubtedly the team’s best player against UMass and Holy Cross. Even though his TD total was down against Wake Forest, Dillon’s presence was still felt. There was a play action fake that set up four of Brown’s five touchdown passes. The threat of AJ Dillon is so great that linebackers and safeties alike got drawn in by these fakes, which allowed the Eagles receivers to get behind them to score on over-the-top throws.

This is not to diminish Anthony Brown’s game, because all of his throws were nearly perfect. It does show that an incredibly strong running game will open up deep balls which often result in scoring plays thanks to Brown’s downfield accuracy. If Dillon can get going early and force the opposition’s secondary to pay great attention to him, BC will be a very exciting offense to watch with lots of long bombs that will result in six.

Up Next

Next Saturday the Eagles travel to West Lafayette, Indiana to take on the 0-3 Purdue Boilermakers. Despite Purdue’s rough start, an out-of-conference road contest will provide valuable insight for the rest of the season. Kick-off is at noon ET on ESPN2.
