Once again, the Texas Longhorns jump out and score the first run of the game. And Tennessee Tech hadn’t learned yet to not pitch to Kody Clemens with runners on base.
After a leadoff walk to David Hamilton and a Duke Ellis sac bunt, Clemens came up and ropped a 3-1 changeup into right center field for a RBI double, his 70th RBI on the season.
Another leadoff walk to begin the 2nd inning for Texas, another run scored. Tennessee Tech starter Travis Moths had issued just 36 walks in 95.2 inning this season for a 3.37 walks per 9 innings. He walked four today in 6.2 innings. The 2nd inning walk to Jake McKenzie came around to score on a two-out bloop double to left field for Ryan Reynolds.
Tech got a run back in the 2nd on a throwing error from Kody Clemens on a possible double play. And then return made up for his error next half inning.
First pitch to Clemens, with no runners on, was sent deep into right field onto Comal St for a solo bomb. As Clemens rounds the bases, he gave a nice Hook’em Horns to the Tennessee Tech bench as passed by. For reference, Tennessee Tech flashed the horns down as they won the game yesterday.
Move over Roger, a new Clemens might be coming for that nickname.
After the game, Tennessee Tech head coach Matt Bragga said to the media, “We may walk him [Kody Clemens] every time tomorrow.”
The two teams traded runs in the 7th inning as Ellis knocked a two-out single up the middle to score Tate Shaw before David Garza launched Blair Henley’s first pitch off the day off the scoreboard in left-center field.
After the Garza home run, Henley was nails as he didn’t allow another hit the rest of the game and got the save to force a Game 3 tomorrow.
Chase Shugart had a very gritty performance. Including today’s start, he has allowed just one run on 10 hits over 17 innings in those three starts. Today, he went six innings allowing one unearned run on two hits while striking out five and walking five.
The three hits were the least amount of hits Tennessee Tech has had in a game this season and the two runs were tied for the least amount of runs scored.
Game 3 will be at Noon CT on ESPN2 tomorrow. Tennessee Tech will start LHP Alex Hursey (8-4, 4.52 ERA) while Texas is TBA.
