With the first round of the FIBA Basketball World Cup starting just a few days ago, national teams are now competing to move on to the next round. One team to keep an eye on is Team France. They are led by NBA players Rudy Gobert and Evan Fournier, the latter who just scored 26 points. Fournier’s 26 points gave Team France a boost to beat Team Germany. France won 78-74.
When looking at the current standings of the teams competing, France, which is a part of Group G, is second to the Dominican Republic to become the top team of that group.
Let’s compare that to other teams that have Orlando Magic players. Nigeria has Aminu Al-Farouq which is third in Group B. Montenegro has Nikola Vucevic and they are fourth in Group F. Canada has Khem Birch and they are third in Group H.
Currently, the way things are looking for Team France, there is a possibility the team may be able to move on to the next round. However, this is dependent on how France competes these next two games. The first game will be against Jordan. They are currently third out of the four teams in Group G. The final game is against the Dominican Republic. They currently rank first in Group G.
Another factor to consider is whether or not Evan Fournier will be able to extend his phenomenal performance over the next two games. Additionally, one question that arises is whether or not the rest of the team will be able to provide the necessary firepower when Fournier gets cold during the game.
Technically, yes the rest of the team should be able to have other teammates contribute offensively. However, anything can happen. One moment a team could be in talks to win it all. The next day, they can be on the verge of being eliminated from the competition.
France’s next game will be against Jordan on Tuesday, Sept. 3, at 8:30 AM EST.
