The Atlanta Hawks played their second preseason game on Oct. 5 against the Memphis Grizzlies. Both of these teams had top picks playing in this game, but both were used differently in the matchup. Trae Young started for the Hawks, while Jaren Jackson Jr. came off the bench for the Grizzlies. The Hawks lost 120-110, and here are some things to takeaway from the contest.

Tyler Dorsey showing out

Tyler Dorsey played good minutes for the Hawks last season. When Kent Bazemore went down, his minutes went up and he played well at shooting guard. He came into the Summer League with the same mentality and was one of the best young guys on the court. Well now we’re in the preseason and Dorsey hasn’t lost a step. He started for Taurean Prince who didn’t travel with the team, and he had a nice game. He had 18 points while shooting 4-for-9 from three. Dorsey will definitely be battling for minutes this season with DeAndre’ Bembry and Kevin Huerter as they all are trying to make an impact on the team.

Alex Len hitting from 3

It looks like Alex Len is shooting from deep now. Coming into training camp and the preseason, one of the things people should have looked out for was Len shooting threes. Pierce said that he wanted to see him out on the arc more, and it seems as if Len has been working on it. He hit two this game and ended the game with 10 points. If he can hit those on a consistent rate, he will play a big part in the Hawks rotation at center and might still be in the starting lineup with Dewayne Dedmon gets healthy.

Hawks bench trying to gel

It didn’t start off well for the Hawks bench at the beginning, but it got better as the game went on. Alex Poythress and Bembry both ended the game with 10 points. Omari Spellman played his first preseason game and ended the night with five points and nine rebounds. It will be important for the bench to build some chemistry in these games, because we all know when it’s time for the starters to come out.. somebody has to produce.

Mediocrity and heartbreak. That’s what your life consists of being an Atlanta sports fan, and I’ve lived it for years now. The Atlanta Hawks have been labeled as mediocre for 10 years straight. Even when they were one of the best teams in 2015, they were swept by the Cavaliers in the Conference Finals. The Falcons are nothing different. Mediocre enough to get to the playoffs, and then vulnerable enough to break your hearts at the end. I know you watched the Super Bowl. So as an Atlanta fan you’re either going to get one or the other. It’s sad to say, but I’m numb to it. One day we’ll break this curse, the question is when?
