We all know that the last two months have been a little unentertaining without college football but fear no more. Spring Ball is back in Statesboro beginning Thursday, Mar. 24 from 3:15 to 5:45 p.m. This will mark the first practice of the Coach Tyson Summers Era.
Summers started off his first year at Georgia Southern by signing the best Sun Belt Conference class rated by multiple recruiting websites. Summers signed a total of 27 recruits this offseason, including 24 from the high school level, one from prep school and gaining two mid year transfers. Coach Summers also secured the first four star recruit for the Eagles.
The Eagles have a good returning cast on offense such as Kevin Ellison, Favian Upshaw, L.A. Ramsby, Wesley Fields and Matt Breida. The Eagles offense tallied 4719 yards and 54 touchdowns on the ground, while adding 824 yards and 4 touchdowns through the air.
Per game the Eagles averaged 363 yards which was the highest in the FBS as well as the highest total rushing yards for a team. Georgia Southern was ahead of Air Force, Navy and Baylor. Air Force and Navy are both run-heavy offenses like the Eagles, but they are more of a tradition style of triple option.
The defense is losing pieces such as Antonio Glover, Caleb Williams, Matt Dobson and Antwione Williams. The Eagles’ defense allowed 23.54 points per game against a solid schedule of teams. Five of the 12 opponents the Eagles faced in the regular season went on to play in bowl games last year.
Georgia Southern will hold their spring game at Statesboro High School on April 16 at noon. They will open up the season on the newly installed turf on Sep. 3 against Savannah State, before heading on the road to face South Alabama on Sep. 10.
