The Sooners headed in to the Cotton Bowl with a lot on the line. A chance at a national title, a chance for an undefeated season, and a chance to bring the Golden Hat back to Norman. As soon as the game started, that all seemed to fade away quickly. Oklahoma got off to a hot start scoring on the first possession, but looked flat until the huge comeback in the 4th quarter.
The biggest issue for the team was their struggles on defense. Just a week ago, Texas was only able to score one offensive touchdown against Kansas State, and the Sooners defense made Sam Ehlinger look like a superstar. Texas has a ton of weapons on offense, and their two stud wideouts, Lil’Jordan Humphrey and Collin Johnson exploited the Sooners secondary throughout the entire ball game.
The run game by Ehlinger was really the biggest issue though, as he snapped the ball, ran left or right, and wasn’t touched for 10 yards. He finished with 73 rushing yards and three scores, and that really deflated the Sooners.
Before I talk more crap on the Sooners, it’s important to say that QB1 Kyler Murray played a hell of a game, despite the two costly turnovers. He had 400 total yards, including the big 67 yard TD in the fourth that brought the Sooner crowd back to life. He threw the ball well, connecting with CeeDee and Hollywood for 15 catches and over 200 yards. They also combined for three scores themselves. But for now, back to the frustration in their defense.
The Sooner defensive line was never able to put any pressure on the Texas offense, and let them run wild all game. Giving Ehlinger so much time allowed Humphrey to tear up Parnell Motley and Tre Norwood for 135 yards and a score. He also threw for a TD, showing his versatility, but also OU’s inability to slow down the offense in any capacity.
Allowing Texas to score 48 points was the icing on the cake for the Sooners, as Lincoln Riley made the decision to fire Mike Stoops and promote Ruffin McNeil to the interim DC posistion. Clearly, the fan base was unhappy with Mike Stoops, but it’s yet to be seen if Ruffin will make a difference as far as getting the defense to tackle and cover better than they have been all season long.
OU has their bye week this week, and it couldn’t come at a better time as they find ways to save their 2018 season.
