Things could not have started out much better for the West Virginia Mountaineers this season. The team came in to the year with higher expectations than any West Virginia football team has had in recent years, and they have backed these expectations up.

Through two games the Mountaineers are 2-0, and neither game has been even close. West Virginia has outscored their opponents 92-28 in that stretch, a historical mark for this dynamic squad.

Granted the wins have been against two sub-par teams in Tennessee and Youngstown State, but there is still something to be said for the way West Virginia has started this season.

Quarterback Will Grier has looked like a clear Heisman candidate, and has somehow been even better than he was in 2017. David Sills and David Long have also been outstanding, and the Mountaineers defense has looked much better than expected, especially along their defensive line.

All in all, the year could not have started out much better for the Mountaineers, but Saturday they face their first real test in Kansas State. Now, this Kansas State team is not like the strong top 25 contending K-State teams we have seen a few years back, but it is a team that could give the Mountaineers problems, as they have in the past.

This is a huge game for West Virginia to open Big 12 play. It is a chance to prove that this team is different than that of years past, and that they can perform when expectations are at their highest.

Coming in to this game ranked as the No. 12 team in the country, the Mountaineers could very easily pull into the nation’s top 10 next week if they can take care of business against Kansas State.

The Mountaineers are big favorites in Saturday’s match up, but it will take a solid game from Will Grier and company to come out 3-0.

If West Virginia can cover the spread and beat Kansas State, it could set their season off and show that this year is different than years past.
