The NHL/Vegas Golden Knights expansion draft is scheduled for Wednesday, June 21st. Teams have until Saturday, June 17th at 5:00 P.M. ET to submit their Protection Lists. Vegas will make their expansion selections by June 20th at 5:00 P.M. ET, with the announcement of selections taking place the next day, June 21st. The San Jose Sharks will submit their protection list, more than likely with these guys on that list using the 7-3-1 format.

Joe Pavelski – F

Not a lot needs to be said. The Captain will remain the Captain for a long time.

Logan Couture – F

Again, one of the Sharks best skaters. He will remain in teal.

Tomas Hertl – F

“Fun must be always.” The Shark who always wears a smile. He has the talent as well. Obvious keeper.

Jannik Hansen – F

With the trade of Nikolay Goldobin for Jannik Hansen, Hansen becomes an automatic reserved selection. He will be in teal next year as well. (Hey Coach, put Hansen on the second power play).

Melker Karlsson – F

The Melkman might not put up flashy numbers, but he battles. He is a valuable piece to this team going forward. GM Doug Wilson agrees, as Karlsson received a three year, $6 million extension.

Chris Tierney – F

Tierney has become a mainstay in the Sharks lineup, having centered the third line before Hertl was moved to Center. Tierney now centers the fourth line, surrounded by Karlsson and rookie Marcus Sorensen. The Sharks will be banking on Tierney to continue to progress. The sixth forward spot goes to #50.

Joel Ward – F

The aging veteran is entering the final year of a three year deal signed back in the summer of 2015. However, Wardo is renowned for his leadership. Everyone in the dressing room respects him. For his leadership alone, Ward gets the last forward reserve spot.

Brent Burns – D

With an 8 year, $64 million contract, Burns’ spot was reserved on November 22nd. He became the Sharks’ first official keeper.

Marc-Edouard Vlasic – D

Vlasic has become the Sharks’ best defensive defenseman. His contract is up at the end of next season, but the two sides are already talking extension. From what has been reported, it seems like a deal could be reached by early July. Vlasic will remain in San Jose for a long time.

Justin Braun – D

The second half of one of the league’s top shut-down defensive pairs. It is incredibly hard to believe the Sharks will split the pair by exposing Braun to the expansion draft. Keeper.

Martin Jones – G

Much like Pavelski, nothing needs to be said. The man who led the Sharks to their first Stanley Cup Final appearance will be reserved. In other Joner news, talks between Jones and the Sharks have been great, and a big deal seems imminent.

Oh wait, Joe Thornton and Patrick Marleau are not going to be protected?!? Well, Jumbo and Patty are technically not Sharks at the moment. By waiting to offer extensions, the Sharks are able to keep more of their core safe from the expansion draft. So look for contract negotiations to heat up after June 21st. If you want one or the other, or both, back in San Jose, there is no reason to worry just yet.

My name is Charles Barrera. I’m from a small town just north of the Bay Area. Sports are a big part of my life; I have three of my favorite team’s logos tattooed on my left arm and right calf. To call me dedicated is a massive understatement. My dog also reps my teams with her collars. I love going to games and collecting memorabilia. I’m currently working at a middle school with severely handicapped students while going to school for a major in journalism/communications.

  1. Because of the 40/70 rule the Sharks are going to have to leave two forwards that meet that criteria exposed unless they make a move before tomorrow at 3 pm. with that list the only eligible forward that is exposed would be Boedker as Joe Thornton or Patrick Marleau would not count towards the 70/40 as they are not currently under contract next year meaning that one of the forwards you have protected as of right now would have to be exposed.
