Are the Saint’s looking to draft a QB Early?
According to multiple news sources, Payton took a trip out to west Texas last Thursday to instruct a private practice session for Mahomes and the Red Raiders. This occurred while Saints QB Coach, Joe Lombardi, was in North Carolina for Mitchell Trubisky’s pro day. With an aging Drew Brees, maybe New Orleans is looking to take advantage of this year’s stacked QB class. The Saints are in an interesting position given that they acquired a second first round pick from New England when they traded away Brandin Cooks. They’re currently slated to pick 11th and 32nd.
Mahomes gaining a lot of attention lately
Sean Payton and the Saints aren’t the only ones paying attention to Lubbock. Chargers coach and Tech alumnus Anthony Gill reportedly had a provate work-out as well. Not only that, but Mahomes has slowly crept into the the first round pick conversation following the combine. He’s been projected as high as #3 overall, but there’s a lot of speculation about his ability to excel at the next level. In the air raid system, Mahomes put up video game numbers during his tenure at Texas Tech. Mahomes garnered a stunning 11,525 YDS, 93 TD, and 8.8 Y/A. Even more noteworthy, is his first rate ability to scramble and make plays outside the pocket. He’s one of seven to participate in Jon Gruden’s QB camp, there’s a good reason to believe he could be the real deal. Often compared to the likes of Johnny Manziel, the current Kingsbury protege is still clearly facing an uphill battle to break the system QB stereotype.
6-3, 230, 4.84
Mahomes is surprisingly sizable for a QB with his speed and agility. Like his old man, he’s a former pitcher drafted right out of high school and it clearly shows. He’s registered the fastest throw mph in combine history. Deep balls are not an issue for Pat. He’s consistently displayed his ability to complete a pass from anywhere on the field at any angle. I think it’s best to describe him as resilient. He took consistant hits because of his many short yardage runs and abysmal offensive line. However his messy footwork and questionable decision making still leave a lot to be desired. Despite being a little rough around the edges, Mahomes has an extremely high ceiling and could be a steal if picked late in the 1st or early 2nd round.
