The Atlanta Hawks just ended a tough four-game road trip, which was a great time to learn and build as a team. With this road trip coming early in the season, it helped the team figure out their identity as well. With a young team all around, any way to get better is very crucial for the future.

Playoff teams

With this road trip came four potential playoff teams this season. The Los Angeles Lakers game showed us that the Hawks could keep up with the LeBron James-led team, and it came down to the last second. They also kept up with the Golden State Warriors for the first half, but Golden State eventually pulled away late in the third quarter. The Hawks then faced the Denver Nuggets in a game that got away severely. The Nuggets offense found its groove to the tune of a 138-93 loss for the Hawks. Jeremy Lin and Alex Poythress fared well against a good defense of late. After that, the Hawks traveled to Indiana to face the Pacers in the last of the road trip. If they can show some growth throughout these games, it will help their confidence through the year.

Early struggles

Road trips may correlate to struggles on the court as well. Trae Young has struggled with his shot through these games so far but has been able to elevate his playmaking instead. Rookies Kevin Huerter and Omari Spellman have struggled as well, which is a good time for the vets to come in and show them the way. Helping them through this trip will be beneficial and prepare them for other ones in the future.

Getting some rest

Traveling all the way to the other side of the country is cool until you realize the time change is crazy. These guys probably have traveled like this during their college careers, but they always say the NBA is a different beast. Not only are you playing late at night, but you’re playing against some of the best teams in the league. Getting some rest through these west coast games will be good for them as they finish out the road trip.

Mediocrity and heartbreak. That’s what your life consists of being an Atlanta sports fan, and I’ve lived it for years now. The Atlanta Hawks have been labeled as mediocre for 10 years straight. Even when they were one of the best teams in 2015, they were swept by the Cavaliers in the Conference Finals. The Falcons are nothing different. Mediocre enough to get to the playoffs, and then vulnerable enough to break your hearts at the end. I know you watched the Super Bowl. So as an Atlanta fan you’re either going to get one or the other. It’s sad to say, but I’m numb to it. One day we’ll break this curse, the question is when?
