Can we even call Bynum a former 76ers player since he never played a second with the team? Nevertheless, this news doesn’t impact the current 76ers but Bynum himself will always have an important role in the team’s history.
Summer of 2012
The 76ers were looking to find a star after a second-round exit in the 2011 playoffs. They maximized that roster and needed to make a splash and find a difference maker.
The opportunity presented itself on Aug.10, 2012. The 76ers acquired the all-star center from the Los Angeles Lakers in a four-team trade.
In fairness, most fans supported the trade and it made sense at the time. They needed to make a change and acquiring an all-star certainly fit that criteria.
Unfortunately, injuries never allowed Bynum to play for the 76ers.
After the 2013-2014 season, Bynum was out of the league and Iguodola eventually signed with the Golden State Warriors.
Aftereffects of the trade
The trade was so bad it made ownership change direction in 2013. Sam Hinkie was hired to rebuild the roster.
Hinkie attempted to right the wrong when he acquired the first-round pick back during the 2014 draft along with Dario Saric.
It was one of the worst trades in franchise history but looking back, it certainly hurts less now than during the 2012-2013 season.
