Earlier in the year, I was one of very many who were extremely outspoken in calling for Falcons’ offensive coordinator, Steve Sarkisian’ job. The Falcons’ offensive was AWFUL earlier in the year. The league’s best offense, and one of the greatest offenses the NFL has ever seen, went from a Super Bowl appearance to bottom-half of the league in seemingly the snap of a finger. All of the sudden, Matt Ryan was throwing horrible interceptions, Devonta Freeman was struggling to just get back to the line of scrimmage, and Julio Jones was seeing less than 5 targets a game. This was completely thrown on Steve Sarkisian’s play calls.
However, as we saw with Kyle Shanahan in his first year, there is going to be a little bit of an adjustment process for any OC in his first year. But, just as fast as the struggles came, they seemed to leave. The Falcons’ have now won 4 out of their last 5 and the offense has been close to tops in the league in scoring in these four wins (we are going to pretend the game against the Vikings didn’t happen). The 2016 Falcons appear to be back and, I could not be more excited for it. With 3 games left, all against divisional opponents, the Atlanta Falcons are very much in the hunt for a playoff spot. So, if the offense continues to play at the high level that it has of late, another Super Bowl run could be on the horizon. “Rise up Atlanta!”
