Over the past week, the Reds have been getting healthier and playing up to the standard of baseball that they’ve established since the All-Star break. Zack Cozart rejoined the starting lineup, while Homer Bailey and Tim Adleman rejoined the starting rotation. Unfortunately, though, they are not perfectly healthy. And even though they previously made a couple of big moves and are looking ahead to September call-ups (as this site has made note of numerous times), they were still quite active over the weekend.
According to reds.com, Alfredo Simon has been recalled after five rehab appearances to replace Josh Smith, who was optioned after relieving Bailey for four innings on Sunday. Prior to Sunday’s game, though, there were a couple of injuries to address.
After recalling Jose Peraza on August 20, the Reds had a surplus of infielders/utility men, but they rectified that by sending down Tony Renda. The only downside was that it had to happen so catcher Raffy Lopez could be called up to take over for Tucker Barnhart, who is day-to-day with a hand injury.
For the time being, though, the Reds are in Anaheim to play the Los Angeles Angels for the last series before the call-ups.
