Reds roster updates 9/13

The Reds roster is unsurprisingly far from set as September rolls along and injury problems are not helping.

According to reds.com, Alfredo Simon was placed on the 60-day disabled list and has to have surgery on his shoulder. It is hard to see how this will be too much of a loss for the Reds given his disappointing performance this season, but for Simon the surgery comes as perhaps an equivalent disappointment. He will not be able to finish the season and becomes a free agent as soon as the off-season begins.

For the Reds, though, it opens a spot on the 40-man roster and, along with the injury troubles of Cody Reed, opens up a couple spots in the bullpen. The team took advantage of that by promoting pitchers Abel De Los Santos and Matt Magill in corresponding moves.

De Los Santos was claimed earlier this year and Magill was acquired from the Dodgers in the Chris Heisey trade two off-seasons ago.

In news relating to Reds position players, Billy Hamilton still has not returned to the lineup since suffering an oblique injury more than a week ago, just after September call-ups began. Notably absent from the call-ups were top prospects Dilson Herrera and Jesse Winker, along with top pitching prospect Amir Garrett and it still does not look like even Herrera and Garrett will get chances despite being on the 40-man roster. And, although Winker would be a logical choice to take some playing time while Hamilton is on the back-burner, that seems more unlikely considering he is not on the 40-man roster and Hamilton has not been placed on the DL. Cincinnati.com does a good job of going more in depth with the issues here.

Elsewhere, the Reds made it official that they signed Cuban free agent pitcher Vladimir Gutierrez last week, as was reported early on.

Following a weekend that saw them take three in a row out of four in Pittsburgh to hamper the playoff chances of the Pirates, the Reds are back in Cincinnati where they are taking on the Milwaukee Brewers for a three game set to begin the week. They won the first game on Monday by a score of 3-0 to extend their current winning streak to four games.
