The Jacksonville Jaguars held a press conference on Thursday the 12th to talk about the future of the franchise. This conference featured owner Shahid Khan, Executive VP of Football Operations Tom Coughlin, head coach Doug Marrone, and GM David Caldwell. The press conference featured the following.

  • The team would not go into personnel hirings and replacements. They would not talk about possible assistant coaching candidates. One interesting note is Marrone would not comment on if Nathaniel Hackett and Todd Wash would return as coordinators. They both should be returning for the 2017 season, but it is unsure of what their roles would be.

  • They would also not comment on the players. Coughlin would not comment on what he thought of the current players. Most likely so that people wouldn’t speculate on who still be here next season. The one player that they did comment on was Blake Bortles. Coughlin said that…

    “Blake Bortles is our quarterback”

  • An interesting comment is that the search committee was not used to find a coach. Khan wanted Marrone as the coach and used the committee as a second opinion. Marrone was the man that Khan wanted and Coughlin gave his approval.

  • Decisions regarding the team will be a combined effort. Coughlin, Marrone, and Caldwell will come together to decide on staff and players. Khan did say though that

Coughlin will have the final say.

  • This does look like a staff that is determined. Marrone said that players will “earn the right to work every day and win that day”. Coughlin also stressed the importance of winning and giving Jacksonville a team to be proud of.

Overall this was a fantastic press conference. Doug Marrone did not look promising as a head coach, but this press conference should change some people’s’ minds. This is a staff that wants to win and will not tolerate losing. They will hold their team to high expectations and high standards and will try and make this a well disciplined team. Marrone might have to prove to people that he should be the head coach, but Coughlin already looks like a great fit in his new role.
