As the 2018 MLS season has finally begun to wind down, the real season for the New York Red Bulls is about to begin. With two games left on the calendar, they find themselves having already clinched a first round playoff bye and in second place in the Eastern Conference standings. They’re one point behind Atlanta United for first place which means that they’re still in contention for winning the MLS Supporters’ Shield.

If the Red Bulls were to finish the season in second place they would play the winner of the knockout round match between that blue team and D.C. United (who are currently in sixth). If they were to finish first, they would play the winner of the Philadelphia Union and Columbus Crew match. Now, I know every single season the team’s main ambitions should be to win everything. Plain and simple. Which means that a large part of me is rooting for Atlanta to drop points and that the Red Bulls win their last two, ensuring the Supporters’ Shield and the easier next-round match up. On the other hand, a very small part of me relishes the prospect of playing a playoff game in a baseball stadium and ending their season. No matter what happens I think we’re in for an entertaining end to the season, one which finally has us lifting the MLS Cup.
