Kawhi Leonard has been in the news almost every day during the 2017-2018 season as well as the 2018 offseason. The saga with the San Antonio Spurs is over and he will be starting a new era with the Toronto Raptors. Not too long ago Leonard was seen as a raw prospect. Lets look at Leonard’s career so far.
From the start
Leonard was born in Los Angeles, Calif. Leonard attended Canyon Springs High School. After that, he transferred to Martin Luther King High School during his junior year. By the time he was a senior, Leonard was named California Mr. Basketball and was a four-star recruit.
Leonard attended San Diego State from 2009-2011. While at San Diego State, Leonard was a consensus All-American, NABC All-American Third-Team. He also was a two time All-Mountain West first team, two time All-Mountain West All-Tournament Team, All-Mountain West defensive team, Mountain West tournament MVP and Mountain West freshman of the year. Leonard would declare for the NBA draft in 2011.
In the NBA
Leonard was selected with the 15th pick in the 2011 NBA Draft by the Indiana Pacers. Leonard was immediately traded to the Spurs for George Hill. After his rookie season, Leonard was name to the All-Rookie First team and finished fourth in Rookie of the Year voting.
Leonard’s third season is where his career took off. Leonard would help the Spurs to 62 wins while grabbing the No. 1 seed in the Western Conference. They also had the best overall record. He helped the Spurs win the championship where Leonard was named the finals MVP.
The next two seasons, Leonard would win the Defensive Player of the Year award. He became only the sixth player to win the award twice. He was also the first player to win the award back-to-back since Dwight Howard did it in 2010 and 2011.
Currently, Leonard is a NBA champion, Finals MVP and a two-time all-star. He was named to the all-NBA first team twice, named to the All-defensive first team three times, the All defensive second team once and was a first team rookie. Leonard has led the league in steals and is a two time defensive player of the year.
Leonard was recently in the news a lot as he requested a trade out of San Antonio. He played in nine games due to a quad strain that strained the relationship. Leonard was recently traded to Toronto. This will now be a fresh start for Leonard on a new team and in a new conference.
