Weeks after Stallings has been fired, Pitt still hasn’t found a new head coach. A home run attempt at landing Dan Hurley fell short today as he turned down three million to go to UCONN who plays in the American Athletic Conference. Not only that, but, apparently it was for less money, although there is no confirmed amount. Call me crazy, but, I don’t think Pitt was ever really in the mix for him.
Only a few days earlier, another coaching target in Tom Crean signed a contract with Georgia. This all brings up the huge question of who is going to be the guy to take the helm of this falling Pitt basketball program?
It needs to be a guy who is going to turn this team back into the powerhouse that it once was and I see two guys who can do that, Sean Miller and Thad Matta. Before you say, “Miller put out a statement already saying he isn’t interested.” I know, but, still you have to wonder if that is him actually not interested or Pitt not desperate enough to go after him just yet. Per Andrew Fillipponi on twitter, he said that it was Miller was interested, but, Pitt wasn’t offering.
I’m being told Sean Miller was interested in Pitt and WANTED the job but wasn’t offered. Sources say Heather Lyke didn’t want to “stake her reputation as an athletic administrator” on the Miller hire.

Yes, landing Miller is a long shot and would be an extremely risky call considering the FBI investigation, but, it is also the best choice if Pitt can’t land Matta. IF they can’t land Matta. The problem with this is I don’t think they will land Matta.
He turned down the Georgia job because ike he didn’t think he was ready to give Georgia everything they wanted and needed. If he wasn’t ready to give Georgia everything they need, not only does that sound like he isn’t ready to coach again, but, what makes people believe he would be wanting to get in this mess with Pitt? Not only did Pitt go winless in their conference this past year, but, since Stallings was fired 10 plus players/recruits have requested releases. Pitt is in a mess at this point and has a lot more wants and needs than Georgia.
While, I hope Matta takes the Pitt job I don’t see it happening. After that, while I hope Pitt offers Miller the job, I think there is a low chance of that. So if options 3 and 4 don’t pan out, then where does Pitt go? Well that is when this gets tough.
Two names that I think could be good are Eric Musselman of Nevada and Nate Oats of Buffalo. Nate Oats, I think would be great and apparently he has actually been in talks with Pitt, since Hurley turned down the offer. Both guys, have done a lot to build up programs and I think they as well would be great fits to help turn this program around.
