Before committing to Pitt on Super Bowl Sunday, three-star class of 2018 cornerback Erick Hallett received offers from 26 schools around the country. He had already de-committed from Washington State, a top contender in the Pac-12.
“I didn’t feel they wanted me as bad as they did originally,” Hallett told Armchair. As a result, the decision to back off his initial pledge was not a difficult one.
Only two days after de-committing from Washington State, Hallett went on an official visit to Pitt, and it did not disappoint. The Panthers staff’s style of recruitment suited him much better than the Cougars’.
“I just felt a little more personable in the recruiting process,” he said.
Eight days after the visit, Hallett verbally committed to Pitt via his Twitter account.
In high school Hallett earned 1st-Team All-District and 1st-Team All-Greater Houston honors. His senior campaign saw him pick off six passes and lead the Cy-Fair Bobcats to a state title.
Randy Bates, Pitt’s new defensive coordinator, played a large role in swaying Hallett.
“[Randy Bates] most definitely [played a big role],” Hallett said, “He’s really my main recruiter in all of this.”
Submitting his LOI on Wednesday marked the beginning of Hallett’s career at Pitt, which includes some big goals.
“I most definitely want an ACC Championship. After that, I want to compete for a National Championship,” Hallet said. “Personally, I want to be an All-American and win the Nagurski. I want to make Pitt a household name again.”
When considering the talent that Pat Narduzzi and the rest of the coaching staff has brought in, especially in the secondary, Hallet’s goals seems oddly achievable.
A year or two ago Pitt’s secondary lacked the depth to regularly compete with the ACC’s elite, but with four incoming defensive backs and the return of a few key pieces, the backend of the defense is looking to be a strength in 2018.
“I’m really looking forward to it [playing with the young guys],” Hallett said.
