With a 35-17 loss to Georgia Tech, 42-10 win over Rice and 27-24 loss to Syracuse, Pitt football has not been looking very pretty (yes they looked good against Rice but that’s a 1-5 team). As for NC State their past three games have been the polar opposite of Pitt’s. NC State in their past 3 have beat FSU 27-21, Syracuse 33-25, and Louisville 39-25.
NC State will not only be bowl eligible, but, they are certainly in the talks for playing in a New Year Six Bowl. While the Panthers are hoping to somehow pull off winning six games to make a bowl game.
For the Panthers hopes of making a bowl game, this game against NC State is very crucial. Which is alongside the fact that this is at home and they don’t have to play in Raleigh, the one key reason why I could see the Panthers coming away victorious in a toss up game.
Yes, this game is a toss up game, but, no the Panthers aren’t going to pull this one off. Yes, I said it, I know I have seemed to be a Pitt homer at times this season. For example, when I picked Pitt over Penn State or Oklahoma State or Georgia Tech. I truthfully thought they were going to win these games, but I believe they are going to lose this week.
Getting back to the game, the NC State defensive line is going to be a huge story in this game. I don’t believe there is a better line in let alone the ACC but in the nation. A defensive line anchored by Senior defensive end Bradley Chubb, this is a defensive line to fear. Chubb not only leads the ACC in total sacks at six, however, he is also sixth in the entire nation. The scariest part about this line isn’t just how good Chubb is, however, how good the rest of the line is also. We will very well see every starter on that line get drafted in the future.
Like any other team, NC State has their weak points and unfortunately with a struggling Pitt defense, their weak point isn’t their offense. Their weak point is actually on their defense that I was just praising. It is there secondary. NC State is actually worse than Pittsburgh when it comes to passing defense (which as we know is horrific) and is fifth in the nation in passing yards given up this season at 1,778 yards. If you do the math that is about 300 yards passing given up a game.
That is a key spot that the Panthers are going to have to hit if they want to come out and pull of an upset on this hot NC State team. Don’t get me wrong, I think Ben DiNucci is going to have a great game this upcoming Saturday because of this fact, but, I just don’t believe the Pitt defense is going to be able to do enough to stop this NC State offensive attack.
That is the key reason why I think this is going to be an offensive shootout, which is why I have constantly said this is going to be a toss up game. I just don’t think this toss up game is going to go in Pitt’s favor.
NC State and Pitt play at 12:00 p.m. on Saturday. NC State will win 59-48 in an offensive shootout.
