The Patriots have finalized their initial 53-man roster for the 2016 season by releasing 20 players prior to today’s deadline.
The final cuts included running backs Tyler Gaffney and Joey Iosefa, wide receivers Devin Lucien, Keyshawn Martin, Aaron Dobson, Chris Harper, and DeAndre Carter, tight end Bryce Williams, offensive linemen Chris Barker and Jon Halapio, defensive tackles Joe Vellano, Markus Kuhn, and Woodrow Hamilton, defensive ends Rufus Johnson and Geneo Grissom, linebackers Kevin Snyder and Kamu Grugier-Hill, cornerbacks Cre’Von LeBlanc and Darryl Roberts, and safety Vinny Sunseri.
None of the cuts were particularly shocking, with Martin being perhaps the most unexpected due to the $600K signing bonus he received in January. Some releases, like the team’s 2013 2nd-round selection in Dobson and its 2015 3rd-rounder Geneo Grissom, were notable but not necessarily surprising.
The 53-man roster appears to be set for the initial few games of the season before suspended players Rob Ninkovich and Tom Brady return in week 5. Stay tuned to the Armchair All-Americans for any further updates and a breakdown of the team’s initial roster.
