GAME RECAP

Prior to today, Luke Heimlich had only been handed two losses in the past two years. Today, Heimlich was brought down to earth for a day, being handed his third loss in the past two years as he only got through 2.1 innings pitched after giving up six earned runs.

The UNC offense jumped on him early and often.

Heimlich didn’t start off hot from the get-go as the first two batters got on base by an error and a uncharacteristic hit-by-pitch. The runners would get to first and third, but Heimlich would strand them on the bases without giving up a hit. It looked as if he had turned it on.

Then the Beavers got off to a good start offensively as a Trevor Larnach RBI triple put Oregon State up 1-0 heading into the second inning.

Normally, Heimlich would keep cruising and hold the lead for the Beavers, but today he could not find that extra gear. In the top of the second he started off the inning with a headache, giving up a single and walking a batter. Heimlich went on to limit the damage to one run, giving hope that he would cruise through the game.

But he couldn’t get through the third inning. Heimlich was only able to record one out before being pulled from the game after giving up five hits and five runs.

From there, Oregon State would never make it back. The Beavers made multiple attempts at shortening the deficits, the first one being when a Larnach RBI double and a Adley Rutschman two-RBI single led to a big three-run third inning that made it a 6-4 game.

The score would stay locked at 6-4 until the top of the seventh as UNC would then go on to tack two runs on to their lead before the Beavers could score again.

Oregon State would then answer back, but once again, it wasn’t enough as they were only able to put up two runs in the bottom of the seventh, and they would strand the bases loaded in a huge opportunity to tie up the game.

The Beavers would go on to lose 8-6. They will play on Monday at 2:00 PM versus the loser of Mississippi State and Washington.
