So, how was your night last Saturday? Keep it clean! My mother, aunts, and uncles read my articles!
On second thought, let me tell you about my Saturday night. In short, Saturday was an awesome night for me and all of the other fight fans.
The Ultimate Fighting Championship and Bellator MMA went head-to-head with major events for your viewership.
These dueling promotions were scheduled to do battle for your viewership with major cards back in January, but weeks before the cards were to have taken place, the UFC announced the cancellation of the Jan. 26 UFC 233 pay-per-view event.
This left that night’s Bellator 214 event from The Forum in Los Angeles unopposed.
On Saturday night, we finally got the perfect storm that we have been waiting for as fans of mixed martial arts.
Boy, what an exciting night of action it was. We had two title fights on the evening.
Bellator 221’s main event was a Lightweight championship fight between Patricio Pitbull (real name Patricio Freire) and Michael Chandler.
Pitbull won that contest by first-round knockout. In so doing, he is now the Bellator MMA Lightweight and Bellator MMA Featherweight champion.
Bellator 221 also saw the first half of the Bellator Welterweight Grand Prix semifinals take place with Michael Page taking on Douglas Lima.
Page won that fight via second-round knockout and now awaits the winner of the Rory MacDonald vs. Neiman Gracie fight in the tournament final.
UFC 237 was highlighted by a Women’s Strawweight championship fight between Rose Namajunas and Jessica Andrade.
For my money, this fight delivered the shock of the entire evening, as Andrade captured the belt by second-round knockout due to a slam.
Despite all of the excitement that Saturday night’s double dip brought to the fans, the evening was marred slightly by Anderson Silva’s TKO loss to Jared Cannonier in the first round of the UFC 237 co-main event after Silva sustained a leg injury when Cannonier delivered a kick.
Still, though, Saturday night was a fun night for MMA fans, one which will be talked about, hopefully for years to come.
