With the announcement of Rajon Rondo being waived by the Bulls, the Nuggets have a new free agent they should target.

As discussed in a previous article, Rondo could be the perfect fit for their roster out of any free agent point guard. At the time he was also unlikely to be available for them to go after, making him all the more intriguing now.

Prior free agent candidates for the Nuggets included Jrue Holiday and Jeff Teague but the two seem poised now to sign with the Pelicans and Timberwolves, respectively.

So What Do The Nuggets Need?

The Nuggets need veteran players, championship pedigree, and a point guard to set up its’ shooters and big men. See what I mean about perfect fit?

While he’s coming off an underwhelming statistical year of 7.8 points, 6.7 assists, and 5.1 rebounds per game, he’s just two years removed from averaging 11.9 points, 11.7 assists, and 6.0 rebounds for the Sacramento Kings.

What made the waiving of Rondo so surprising was his obvious importance shown in the playoffs. He and the Bulls won both of the first two games in Boston against the top seeded Celtics. After going down, his team failed to win a game. In those two games, he put up vintage near triple-double stats of 11.5 points, 10 assists, and 8.5 rebounds.

What Rondo Brings to Denver

As long as Rondo is physically still the same player he’s been in the past, there’s no reason the Nuggets shouldn’t attempt to sign him. After being a steal on the market by making just $13.4 million last season, there’s a good chance they could sign him to a reasonable deal this year. Hopefully this fantasy is able to become a reality soon. If not, George Hill wouldn’t be too shabby either, just putting that out there.
