Oh yes. The long awaited return of Scott Frost to Nebraska. The Golden Boy had come home and the party was going to be beautiful. Akron wasn’t going to know what had hit them when true freshman tandem Adrian Martinez and Maurice Washington ran circles around every member of the defense.
The Tunnel Walk only sent the already fever-pitch frenzy into utter bedlam.
J.D. Spielman didn’t quite take the kickoff back, as it bounced out of the back of the end zone.
The offense took the field, but did not head for a huddle. Of course they didn’t though, huddles are gone in the new system.
Sadly though, they never made it to the line of scrimmage and were sent into the locker room as lightning had struck within eight miles of the stadium.
It continued to strike for the next three hours until the game was cancelled, then suspended until Sunday morning, then cancelled again, this time for good.
So what does this all have to with recruiting?
Well you see, Bryce Benhart, four-star offensive tackle, long thought to have been a Wisconsin lean, was in the house for the game after getting his official visit waiver approved.
He was accompanied by such as Tiawan Mullen and Wandale Robinson other top dogs in the 247 2019 player rankings.
Did the rainout hurt the Huskers as it pertained to those targets? No way. Nebraska was already sitting favorably with all of them and they have to realize that the team cannot control the weather. Plus, 90,000 were on hand at kickoff ready to explode at any moment.
Two of those 90,000 were Dwyane Wade and Ndamukong Suh which had to have helped things a little bit. The group of recruits spent several minutes in front of the student section and interacted with fans while on the field.
Keep an eye on these ones, especially Benhart. That would be a nice get for Frost and Co.
Ronald Thompkins Update
After Grayson High School’s (GA) star Running Back Ronald Thompkins left the season-opener with a knee injury, it was diagnosed as an ACL tear, but Nebraska and the coaching staff stayed true to Thompkins’ offer, saying it would still be there while he rehabbed.
That transparency and belief apparently sat very well with Grayson’s recruiting coordinator Kenyatta Watson. If you don’t know, Grayson is also home to hybrid linebacker Owen Pappoe a longtime Husker target who will be taking an official visit to Lincoln sometime this season. I can’t imagine honoring the offer to the injured Thompkins did anything but help the Huskers case with Pappoe.
Stay tuned. Big things could be coming.
