As many have stated when it comes to a series tied at 2-2, the winner of Game five typically goes on to win the series 83 percent of the time. Well the Toronto Raptors won game five after the Washington Wizards merely just disappeared into thin air the last four minutes of the fourth quarter.

There isn’t any question needed to be answered. It was plain and simple how Washington was capable of taking a series lead on the road. They failed to do so in the last few minutes of the second half.

To sum things up, Washington gained a five-point lead over Toronto, 87-82, thanks to Kelly Oubre Jr.‘s 3-point play. That all went to shambles after the Raptors went on a 6-0 run to take the lead.

Washington shot 8 of 24 in the fourth quarter. With 4:06 left, Markieff Morris made a dunk, but that was the last shot made by the Wizards until Bradley Beal made a 3-pointer with 16 seconds remaining. The Raptors kept extending their lead off a three from Delon Wright and a lay-up assisted by DeMar DeRozan.

Washington’s head coach Scott Brooks realized what happened and knew immediately what the Wizards needed to do. “The ball became a little bit stagnant tonight down the stretch,” Brooks said. “We need to get some more ball movement.”

Wizards’ Minutes and Lack of Production

It’s expected that starters will play majority of the minutes on the floor. What’s not expected is that those minutes result in a lack of production as a team or individual player.

STARTERS MIN FG 3PT FT OREB DREB REB AST STL BLK TO PF +/- PTS
M. Morris PF 29 2-8 0-2 2-2 3 6 9 0 1 0 2 2 -5 6
O. Porter Jr. SF 31 4-9 0-3 1-2 0 4 4 2 1 0 1 1 -12 9
M. Gortat C 34 4-9 0-0 2-2 5 7 12 2 0 1 1 4 -7 10
J. Wall PG 44 10-21 0-4 6-7 0 9 9 9 1 3 7 4 -8 26
B. Beal SG 36 8-20 3-8 1-2 0 4 4 3 1 0 3 2 -14 20

Looking at the starters’ minutes and what the results were after Game five, it’s evident that Morris and Otto Porter Jr. should’ve done more in the respected minutes played. If neither were finding their shot, then a bench player should’ve been allowed to step in and see if some change was in order. Power forward Mike Scott only played 14 minutes, but was 3 for 5 finishing with seven points and four rebounds. From the looks it seemed like Scott would’ve remained hot. He could’ve kept the Wizards afloat a little while longer. Oubre had 14 points on 3 of 11 shooting and ice cold from beyond the arc (1-7), but played 26 minutes.

Bad situations

The word for Porter was that he had some issues with his leg that’s been bothering him since the close of the regular season. If there was already some knowledge that Porter’s leg was an issue, why have him play starter minutes. He’s not producing in this series so why do this. This situation easily could be added to Washington’s downfall.

Born and raised in Washington, D.C., sports has always been a topic of conversation, predominately because our city hasn’t had a championship parade in a very long time. Luckily, I’m only a fan of three teams in the area: Wizards, Capitals, and Mystics. To add on to my list of fandom are the Baltimore Orioles and THE 5X Super Bowl champions, the New England Patriots. My all-time favorite sports are tennis, football, and field hockey. Weird huh? I can debate about Serena Williams for hours….and hours….and hours because I was raised on watching her back when she and her sister Venus had the beads in their hair and there is no one even close to being better. PS4 is my poison of choice and I can play MLB The Show for 2-4 hour a day. No judging. All my Mystics, Washington Valor, and tennis writing can be found at Fox Sports 1340AM Radio.
