The month of May means many things. It means the NBA is weeks away from reaching the Finals. Also, it means the NHL is weeks away from their finals as well. This also means the NBA is handing out it’s awards for it’s various categories, such as: Coach of the Year, Rookie of the Year, etc.
Each category had players who deserved to be in their specific category, such as Giannis Antetokounmpo and James Harden being MVP finalists. One thing that stuck out to Orlando Magic fans and players alike was the fact that head coach Steve Clifford was not selected as a finalist for the Coach of the Year category.
Like myself, Magic forward Aaron Gordon expressed confusion on this situation on Twitter.
“Crazy how coach cliff wasn’t in the conversation for coach of the year”, tweeted Gordon.
I agree with his sentiment. The Magic have been consistently bad. Also, Clifford inherited a Magic squad that is near identical to the previous season’s team, with a few exceptions.
Also, Clifford was able to take what he was given and transform them from a team that missed the playoffs since 2012, to a team that made it into the post-season should be a reason for the coach to be considered for coach of the year.
While the finalists for the coach of the year have reasons to be considered in the conversations with Mike Budenholzer of the Milwaukee Bucks and Mike Malone of the Denver Nuggets and Doc Rivers of the Los Angeles Clippers, it does make you wonder how the league could not consider Clifford.
Hopefully the Magic will get the necessary rest they need in the offseason. Now, the organization will prepare for their newly drafted player, this upcoming NBA draft.
