The National League is providing some extremely exciting baseball over the final few weeks of the season.

The long, arduous baseball regular season has entered its final month of 2018. The vast majority of clubs have lost all hope when it comes to their postseason dreams. The American League has all but made up its mind on playoff seeding. Over in the National League, the situation is a bit more contentious.

Eight National League teams are currently in a realistic position of reaching the 2018 MLB Postseason.

National League East

Over in the East, the division that was predicted to belong to the Washington Nationals, the Braves and Phillies are slugging it out. Atlanta sits at 76-62 and three games ahead of Philadelphia. The Braves would be looking at the second seed in the NL if things were to hold as is.

Both the Braves and Phillies have exceeded expectations in 2018. While the two clubs were supposed to improve their marks from a year ago, not many predicted Philly and Atlanta to competing for playoff spots come September. The Braves boast a powerful offense as its foundation, while the Phillies’ arms are the strength of the team.

National League Central

Perhaps the best division in the National League, the Central is wide open with a month to go. While the Cubs and Brewers have been fighting at the top of the division, the Cardinals have quietly snuck up on the two of them. Milwaukee and St. Louis are separated by just a game and a half, and the Brewers are in the midst of a series with Chicago.

Chicago possesses the third best OWin% in baseball according to Baseball Reference, while St. Louis and Milwaukee are both above average. However, the latter two do struggle from the mound which could be the difference in the Central race.

National League West

Yet another highly contested division, the West plays home to the Rockies, Dodgers and Diamondbacks. All three teams are within a game and a half of one another. Fangraphs still gives Los Angeles the highest chance in the division to make the postseason—82.9%. However, the Dodgers currently sit 1.5 games out of the National League Wild Card.

Predictions

The National League was going to be difficult enough to pick at the beginning of the year. Somehow, with just a month left, things have become even muddier. Still, I will give it a go at what I predict the National League side of the bracket to look like in October.

1. Chicago Cubs
2. Atlanta Braves
3. Los Angeles Dodgers

4. Milwaukee Brewers
5. St. Louis Cardinals
