The Michigan Wolverines take on the Southern Methodist University Mustangs this weekend for the first time since 1963. The last, and only, time SMU faced Michigan in Ann Arbor, the Wolverines won with a score of 27-16.

The Mustangs will arrive at the big house this week with an 0-2 record following a tough 42-12 loss against TCU; while the Wolverines are coming off a 49-3 win against the Western Michigan Broncos, entering with a 1-1 record.

In that last Michigan win, Karan Higdon rushed over 100 yards in the first quarter alone against WMU. Quarterback Shea Patterson also held his own with three touchdown passes, throwing for over 100 yards.

Patterson will be matched up against returning SMU quarterback Ben Hicks, who threw for 3,569 yards in the 2016 season, but is struggling with his passing game, competing only 48.4 percent of his passes so far in the past two games.

If Michigan’s defense, led by defensive coordinator Don Brown, executes a performance at the same level as last weekend, the Wolverines could be ending the weekend with a 2-1 record.

Michigan has a -36 spread entering this game and according to ESPN’s football power index, it’s a 98.7 percent to a 1.3 percent matchup, favoring Michigan. This weekend, the Wolverines are hoping to start a winning streak against the Mustangs, and the odds are in their favor.

Judging by the stats and predictions, as well as Michigan coming off a hot win last week, winning this game at home should be no problem for the Wolverines.

My name is Maddy Fri and I am a Communications and English Major at the University of Michigan. I was born and raised a Michigan fan, but only truly began understanding the sport of football during the Brady Hoke era. Still, I remained a true fan and am patiently waiting for Michigan to win a title (and beat OSU). I am, and always will be, loyal to the Detroit Lions – no matter how many times they don’t win a playoff game. Aside from my love for football, Michigan basketball and attending baseball games are a few of my favorite things. I’m excited to join the Armchair team and share my love for Michigan sports.
