It’s looking like coach John Beilein and company are gearing up for yet another championship-caliber season of basketball in Ann Arbor.
Through seven games, Michigan is perfect. The Wolverines sit at 7-0, are ranked No. 7 in the AP Poll and No. 5 in the coaches poll.
After they trounced defending national champions Villanova, the Wolverines would go on to defeat Providence 66-47 in the Naismith Invitational Tip-Off. They continued their dominance Wednesday in the ACC/Big Ten Challenge. The Wolverines outlasted the visiting North Carolina Tarheels by a score of 84-67.
Through their first seven games, the Wolverines are playing the best defense among anyone in the country. Giving up just 51 points per game, their defensive success has been a catalyst for their success thus far.
Taking care of the ball has been a message that Beilein has tried to spread throughout the past several seasons. Michigan currently ranks in the top 20 in fewest offensive turnovers per game, with just 55 turnovers on the young season.
Offensively, the Wolverines have two players averaging over 15 points per game, freshman forward Ignas Brazdeikis and senior guard Charles Matthews. Matthews poured in 21 points in the winning effort against North Carolina, while Brazdeikis reached a new career high in his young career, adding an impressive 24 points. Iggy now has three consecutive games of 20-plus points scoring.
The only avenue for worry for this team so far is its limited amount of depth this season. Currently, just seven players on the team are getting consistent, meaningful minutes, which could spell for disaster barring an injury at any point during the season.
Michigan plays host to Purdue on Saturday, December 1 with an opportunity to beat another top-25 opponent.
